At Lea's school they use large, colored popsicle sticks to indicate behavior for the day. A green stick = no problems. Yellow indicates you got some sort of warning, orange means you were talked to again, and red means you did something really wrong (and also involves having to sit down with the teacher and write a letter to your parents about what you did).
Lea has had a green stick for all but 2 days of her time at her "new school." One of the yellow sticks was for disturbing her other friends during naptime, after which Ms. Lori suggested that Lea might like to have something to play with during naptime while she sat quietly on her cot. So, we brought in a little white board and dry erase marker so that Lea could draw and practice her letters. It seemed to be working great.
However, yesterday, after Lea proudly showed me that her stick was green, Ms. Alexis said, "Lea, did you tell your Mommy what you did during naptime?" Lea gets this angelic beam on her face and just stands there, smiling at me. I asked her what she did, only to get another angelic smile in return. Finally, Alexis tells me that Lea apparently grew bored with coloring the white board yesterday, and moved on to coloring her cot and the sheets on her cot. All covered with black dry erase marker.
I'm guessing this fell into the category of, "Okay, technically we didn't tell you not to do that," which is why she still had a green stick. And for the record, she has now been told NOT to do that. I added several other presumptive "do nots" in there as well (e.g., do not draw on yourself, on your friends, or on anything other than the white board). Always good to cover your bases...
